The relevant object is not the empty shell or the product name. It is the closed, packed bag at its widest, deepest, and tallest external points.
A carry-on can change shape between a bedroom floor and the boarding gate. A telescoping handle may be down while a fixed grip still adds height. Wheels extend below the case. A soft front pocket can bulge. An expansion zipper can turn a slim case into a deeper one. Measuring only the molded body hides the parts most likely to become the farthest point.
Current IATA guidance says carry-on allowances may vary by airline, cabin class, and aircraft type. It also notes that some airlines apply weight limits and that a bag can be placed in the hold when an applicable limit or cabin capacity is exceeded. That makes home measurement useful, but deliberately narrow: it answers three physical questions, not the whole carry-on decision.
Capture the exact rule before touching the tape
Start with the airline evidence for the actual itinerary, not a luggage seller's “cabin size” label or a familiar number from another trip. Record whether the item is a personal item or an overhead cabin bag, which flight or flights the rule covers, the operating context, the three named axes, the units, any linear total, any weight condition, and the date checked.

The measurement record below contains no airline database. That is intentional. You must enter the rule you have verified, so the tool cannot silently choose a carrier, flight, fare, or unit on your behalf.

Use the contents and interior compression you plan to carry. Close the main zipper and every external pocket.

If the expansion zip will stay closed, measure it closed. If you intend to travel expanded, measure that larger state and record it plainly.

Retract the telescoping handle, but include any fixed handle at its normal resting height. Do not press a bulge flat unless it will remain restrained that way.

Alaska's airline guidance specifically tells readers with a soft or expandable bag to remeasure after packing and warns that expanded pockets can change the dimensions.
Measure the full exterior envelope
Place the packed bag on a level floor beside a vertical wall. Take each reading between the two farthest parallel points. A rigid book, square, or second straight object can help project an irregular edge to the tape without squeezing the bag. Read at eye level and record enough precision to preserve a small gap rather than rounding toward the hoped-for answer.

The axis names above describe a practical orientation, not a universal airline vocabulary. Some sources list length, width, and height in another order. Copy the labels from the actual rule, then map them to the bag deliberately. Do not sort three numbers from largest to smallest unless the rule itself tells you to do that.
Keep all three axes separate
A case can be comfortably below two limits and beyond the third. That is why a reassuring total or a single “height” reading is not enough when the airline publishes three individual maxima. Delta's current page is a useful airline-specific example: it states individual dimensions and a separate combined linear condition. The values belong to Delta's rule, not this guide.

A linear total is a fourth comparison
A linear total is the sum of the three exterior readings in the same unit. It does not erase individual limits. When the exact airline rule states both forms, retain both: compare axis one, axis two, and axis three separately, then calculate the total. When the exact rule does not state a linear condition, do not invent one.
Being below one individual limit does not create permission to exceed another. A sum can look acceptable while one named axis remains beyond its own limit.
Use a physical sizer as a recheck, not a forecast
Delta points passengers to reference size displays at ticket counters and gates, and Alaska suggests its sizer when a traveler is in doubt. For those airlines, the device adds a direct physical comparison at the airport. It does not make this publication an airline, and this page cannot predict staff handling, cabin space, or another carrier's device.
Test the packed bag without forcing, removing parts, or holding a bulge inward. If the itinerary uses more than one operating airline, a device for one does not establish the rule or outcome for the other. Keep the exact flight evidence beside the measurement record.
Dimensions are only one gate
Some airline rules apply a weight condition. A ruler cannot answer it.
A measured bag is not proof that the fare or passenger includes that item.
Security, dangerous-goods, battery, and destination rules are separate checks.
IATA says a bag may still move to the hold when stowage capacity is exceeded.
Current 14 CFR 121.589 ties applicable carry-on size and amount to the operator's approved program.
A home reading and this tool cannot decide what happens at the airport.
Build a private measurement record
Enter one verified rule and one packed-bag reading in the same unit. The record shows the arithmetic difference on each axis. It does not choose or validate the rule and never returns “approved” or “fits.”
Take the record back to the allowance
A clean measurement is most useful when attached to a complete allowance record. Confirm the item category, piece entitlement, weight, journey coverage, operating context, source, and consequence of exceeding a limit. Then revisit the bag after any repacking, airline change, aircraft constraint, or new instruction.
A tape measure can reveal a dimensional gap. It cannot close an evidence gap.
