Alaskan flights in about a year: Groundbreaking ceremony at Paine Field

The EVERETT - The opportunity to use Paine Field to get away on holiday or work came much nearer Monday when politicians and industry executives met to lay the foundation for a prospective airliner. It followed the Alaska Airlines' proclamation in May that it intended to operate Paine Field with at least nine flights per day, beginning sometime next year.

In April, Propeller Airports, the construction firm for the two-gate airbase, was granted a classification approval. "In about 12 month we look forward to seeing you at the opening of the terminal," said Propeller CEO Brett Smith. It would be the first New York-based propeller facility to open an offshore Paine Field facility.

None of the other airlines have said they are planning to operate from Paine Field, but Smith said there is a great deal of interest and that they should remain "excited" for more. Smith said the facility would be able to accommodate a peak of about 16 flights a day. Among the distinguished guests were Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib, Alaska CEO Brad Tilden, Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers and Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson.

Parksed in the back when they talked was a all-new Embraer 175, one of the two types of planes that Alaska wants to get out of Seattle from Paine Field. As part of Everett's appeals to the airlines, they are offering travellers an alternate to defy Seattle inner city travel, a point something that Somers has driven home.

"{\a6} I like Sea-Tac, I like Seattle - I don't like going through it," said the district manager. Approximately 11 hectares of land are located between the administrative offices of the aerodrome and the inspection spire. Once operation begins, the district will earn 429,000 US dollars per year in rents plus a portion of the airfare and park fees.

There are already around 300 take-offs and landings per diem from Paine Field, mainly from General Aeronautics, Boeing and other airlines and space agencies. Paine Field was constructed during the Great Depression as part of the Works Progress Administration and was initially conceived as a "super airport". Snohomish County operates the area. Travel services thrived at Paine Field in the 1940' s, when Alaska temporarily relocated its operational bases from its name-giving state to Paine Field.

Also, Alaska constructed the service hall that now houses the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum. Propellers have declared their willingness to restrict flights at nights and early in the mornings in order to mitigate the impact on Mukilteo and other neighborhoods. Surgeries would normally start around 6am and end around 8pm or 9pm, Smith said.

This is not expected by Alaska until the beginning of next year. "That is the missing part of the jigsaw for us in relation to employment and leisure for Snohomish Nation's citizens," Stephanson said. Municipality of Mukilteo still opposes the terminals. Having lost other battlegrounds in national and state courts, the municipality applies to the Supreme Tribunal to examine the county's rental contract with Propeller.

Perhaps no one among the spectators praised Hank Robinett more harshly for getting regular planned business flights to the district airfield. It was Robinett's prediction that in about 10 years time, humans would be comparing the facility with the Boeing Co. arriving at Everett half a cent ago to construct jetliners.
