On 22 June 2017 President Donald J. Trump appointed Robert Wood Johnson as Ambassador of the United States to the Court of St. James's. On August 3, 2017, the United States Senate approved Ambassador elect Johnson. At the Oval Office he was inaugurated on August 21, 2017 by Vice President Mike Pence in the attendance of President Donald J. Trump.

On 29 August 2017 he handed over his powers to the British Foreign Office. Johnson has been Chairman and CEO of The Johnson Company, New York, NY, a privately held wealth manager, for more than thirty years, and Chairman and CEO of the New York Jets football teams and the New York Jets Foundation since 2000.

Johnson is the founding chairman of the Lupus Research Alliance and has worked with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for many years. These charitable organisations are responsible for healing, treating and preventing lupus and 1-labetes, and Ambassador Johnson has collected billions of US dollar on these organisations.

Johnson was a member of the President's Export Council, the President's Commission for White House Fellows, and is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Johnson holds a B.A. from the University of Arizona and is living in London with his spouse Suzanne and their two children. Winfield House, a 12.5 hectare plot on the northwestern side of Regents Park, is the US Ambassadors' formal home.
