The UTA ended the relationship in September 1976, and left Air Ceylon without a helper from Europe. In 1979, Air Ceylon was closed by the Sri Lankan authorities for insolvency and Air Lanka was formed as a new domestic airline. Prior to Air Ceylon shutting down in 1979, it had 1 Hawker Siddeley HS 748 and 1 Hawker Siddeley Trident.
