Driver is a single entity who is engaged to operate a personal car, in particular a luxurious car such as a large saloon or saloon car. Female who is busy driving a car is a driver. Initially such chauffeurs were often personal staff of the car keeper, but today in many cases specialised driver services or single chauffeurs make both driver and car available, although there are services providers that only make the driver available.

Drivers are derived from the English word for stokers, since the first automobiles [1], like their railway and ocean-going equivalents, were steam-powered and were requested by the driver to fuel the engines. Earlier gasoline-powered vehicles were fired by "hot hoses" in the head of the cylinders, which had to be preheated before starting the engines, before electrical ignitions occurred.

This results in the concept of chauffeurs, which in this connection means something like "heating - above". At the beginning of a trip, the driver primed the pipes, then the motor's own compacting process kept them at the right temperatures. They had to be a trained technician to cope with roadside failures and tire damage, which were very prevalent in the early years of the motor vehicle.

Whilst the concept may apply to anyone who earns a livelihood, it usually involves a driver of an elegantly designed car such as a horse-drawn cart, a luxurious saloon car, a bus or, in particular, a saloon car; those who run a bus or non-passenger car are generally designated as 'drivers'. There are some places, especially in emerging markets, where a sufficient labour force allows the medium class to buy servants, and among the rich[3] the driver can be described as a " driver ".

At many places (or in the past) the right bodily presentation is always guaranteed by the driver. Driver in "Desert Rose" Leap up ^ ""...but it just means what we call "firefighter" or what the Englishmen call "stoker"...", Letter to NYT, 1902" (PDF).
