UAV hits sky jet plane: Travel Information Statement

"On October 12, 2017, a skyjet plane was attacked by a UAV on its way to Jean Lesage International Airport in Québec City. It is the first unmanned aerial vehicle to strike a passenger plane in Canada, and I am very pleased that the plane suffered little loss and landed safe.

Honorable Marc Garneau, Canada's Minister of Transport, today made the following declaration about this droning accident in Quebec City: "Transport Canada monitors the plight and is in touch with its transport partner Skyjet, Jean Lesage International Airport and NAV CANADA. I am in touch with the Service de police de la Ville de Québec and we will work with the transportation safety board if you choose to do so.

"Although the overwhelming majorities of UAV carriers are responsible flyers, it was our concerns about events such as these that led me to take actions and take temporary security precautions that restrict where leisure UAVs can be used. Let me point out to UAV owners that jeopardising the security of an aeroplane is highly hazardous and a serious crime.

If you do not have Transport Canada approval, all airfields, helicopter landing pads and floatplane base are "No Door Zones". So far, 1,596 drones cases have been notified to the Division for 2017. 131 of these are classified as security relevant.
