World Car Free Day is an annual celebration that takes place on 22 September in many different nations under the slogan "The town as a place for human beings, as a place for life". Its purpose is to encourage the ideas of walking and biking and the use of local and regional means of communication. A passive lifestyle and pollutants are the major issues with the large number of automobiles that have become typical not only of large towns.

It is intended to remind the general population of the risks of over-engineering for man and the environment and to point out possible alternative solutions to this type of use. Since the beginning of the 1973 fuel crises, various towns have organised spontaneous meetings aimed at minimising the use of private cars. During the first two years the extra activities took place in Reykjavik, Bata and La Rochelle, and in 1995 an informel syndicate of World Car Free Day was founded to preserve these dates.

Every year since 22 September, almost 2,000 towns around the globe have spent the entire week without a vehicle. Municipal administrations are reducing the price of local transportation on this date by granting access to promotional travelers.
