OFFICIAL VIEW: We should improve competitive conditions for cabs and increase them.

On the face of it, it seems that the BC NDP Province Council and a new modernization review of the taxi sector are bowing back to defend it. Finally, it seems unimportant to the consumer whether a company that has bought taxi licenses for enormous amounts in recent years will loose its shirt when ride-hauling applications become law.

This was an exchange between commercial entities after licenses were granted by the regulatory authority for a protective charge, and in all companies sometimes shareholders loose cash on high-risk projects. However, perhaps it is not so terrible to raise the number of cabs by 15 percent, as the BC NDP administration plans, while the introduction of ride-hailing applications will be delayed, even if it seems so, the watch will turn back a tenth.

It would be advantageous to keep cabs above water while avoiding red tape and license resales if it would lead to more competitive conditions if large global companies such as Uber and Lyft entered Metro Vancouver. Taxi cabs are not all poor and can be a constant, secure and dependable source of services, albeit with severe restrictions for people in the area.

On the one hand, cabs are better placed to offer access as they already do, and if properly supported, this could become a sales proposition, as Uber has acknowledged that they cannot offer this one. Whilst it is a fact that a taxi business, Bel-Air Taxi, has lost an occasion by holding a wheelchair-bound elderly for three long hours for a taxi in the rains on Canada Day, this should be an abnormality in a government transport system if it is not a privately owned one.

Should ride-hailing applications force cabs out of the market, these multinational trucks could quickly become a different kind of dependency from which US-based companies would benefit. As we have seen, these applications are not without their own terrible stories, although their comfort cannot be ignored. Modernising the fleets should be the aim to improve the conditions of competitiveness for taxi operators - but with a view to more and not less competitiveness.
