The Melbourne cab is easily recognisable as it has a light on the cabin top and most are lacquered either gold, silvery or matt whit. Cabins are often located in clearly marked driver's compartments, at clearly marked places and bustling places such as Flinders Station. Or you can call a cab on the road.
When the roof light is on, the cab is usually unmanned and can be rented. There are also outside Melbourne in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo, with additional services in the rural cities of Victoria. The taximeters are clearly legible so that you can keep an eye on your fares during the journey.
You have to pay in advanced for your cab rides at noon. In Victoria between 22:00 and 5:00, the rider will ask you for an upfront payment using a point-to-point estimate chart. About X vs. cabs - which is the best?
What are these utilities like? The driver pays a certain amount to rent the cab or to give a percent of the revenue. You can book your cab in several ways - on-line, on the telephone, off the road or through a number of reservation applications. The UberX works entirely through the Uber application and connects travellers with home chauffeurs with their own automobiles.
Passengers can also reserve a cab via the application or use the UberBlack luxury UberBlack travelcard. In the 2015 dispute, we went out to test UberX and taxis and find out which were the least expensive and most dependable. Altogether we made 56 journeys through Sydney - 28 UberX journeys and 28 cab journeys.
Each trip was made in couples - one test driver in a cabin and one in a ÜberX, both traveling from and to the same location - and spread over seven different timeframes to make sure we could accommodate price fluctuations. Between 27 August 2015 and 11 September 2015 (after GST payment had to be started by ÜberX drivers), journeys were carried out in Sydney's inland areas.
ÜberX was less costly than a cab, about nine out of ten. Cabins were on avarage 40% more costly than UberX. UberX was more costly on the three opportunities, it wasn't much - and it was only when prices skyrocketed. From the 28 UberX trips we saw four price increases.
Taxi's showed up faster on avarage. However, this was due to the ease of calling one off the road; when cabs were reserved, they tend to take longer than UberX. On two occasions, there were no taxi shows at all, indicating a problem with dependability.
One of 28 occasions no ÜberX was available (the passenger got the next best options available, UberTaxi - a no longer available service). Taxi drivers achieved an overall mean of 6.7, while Ueber achieved an overall mean of 8.3. Isn' ÜberX less expensive than cabs?
Uber price at face value is lower than cabs, so it may come as no big shock that we have found that cabs are more costly than UberX 89% of the while. In Sydney, for example, UberX is $1.45 per kilometer plus $0.40 per min, while the max cab fare is $2.19 per kilometer plus $0.94 per min if the car is traveling less than 26 km/h.
There are, however, some basic variations in the way in which the tariffs work between the two types of service, so a UberX will not always be cheap. UberX and cabs both calculate a tariff based on travel times and distances. Trip fares are regular and have fixed ceilings in each federal state, usually with two to three different fare categories - daily, per night and tops.
Price formation is flexible and varies with offer and request, due to what it refers to as "surge pricing". A price increase does not occur at a certain point in history, but only when there is high consumer interest and/or not enough driver on the roads. During these periods, the basic interest rates increase gradually, or "jump". ÜberX was less expensive than a cab, about nine out of ten.
Cabins were on avarage 40% more costly than UberX. Considering these discrepancies, it was amazing how rarely price increases actually took place during our test. There was a price rise of four out of 28 prices, only up to 1.5 fold the basic interest rat. The UberX did not turn out to be much more costly (on a 6% average) than a cab (and sometimes it was still cheaper) when it rose at this price point; however, in periods of intensive enquiry, the price rise may well exceed this one.
At the beginning of this year, media coverage quoted an Uber Black journey that on New Year's Eve costs 213 dollars due to the sharp rise in prices, although it would normally be 69 dollars. Whilst you are alerted to price increases before accepting a journey, this function makes price setting unforeseeable for the consumer. On weekends and even later in the evening we were confronted with high prices.
Whilst its fares were generally not too far from the brand, it was usually lower than the rate, which has the inherent risk of being deceptive. UberX took 16 out of 28 cases (57%) longer to show up than the cabs, we found. However for the 10 of 16 occasions (62.5%) cabs were reserved instead of called, the cab took longer to show up.
The taxis also posed the problems of non-arrival. Out of the 28 journeys, there were two cases where the reserved cab did not show up (i.e. they had not arriv ed within 15 min of the booking). Back then, we presented this topic to Blair Davies, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Taxis Association (AITA), who said the sector was conscious of the issues.
He said that if the cab driver's been there for 20 mins or more, the cab driver knows that the odds of the passengers still being there are slim. One part of the issue may be that cab riders are informed of the passenger's arrival point, which can make shorter journeys less appealing.
On the other side, over-drivers only get their target when they show up. Über riders are usually obliged to have a state driving agency (similar to a cab driver), which usually includes penal convictions, health examinations and insurance. In addition to regulating control in each state and region, both authorities have a number of different mechanism in place to guarantee passenger safety.
Every cab is equipped with a tamper-proof safety cam. Cabies have hard-wired GPS tracking devices. Riders are rated anonymely by travellers on a 1 to 5 rating series.
