When Tartikoff announced that he was interested in the show, Medina traced Smith, who was on the East Seaboard at the point, and asked him to take the first airplane to the Los Angeles area for a premature audition as Tartikoff said he wanted to make sure Smith could act before the show continued.

In the autumn 1991-1992 seasons, NBC won two successful TV shows to establish its Monday nights line-up (Blossom was broadcast immediately after The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air). In order to win fame between the two shows, Will Smith was featured in the Blossom Episode "I'm with the Band" as himself under his own name, The Fresh Prince.

In the same series Karyn Parsons was featured in the Blossom EP "Wake Up Little Suzy" as Hilary Banks. In the Patti LaBelle Out All Night show as Hilary came along as well. Both In the House and Fresh Prince were executive-produced by Winifred Hervey, David Salzman and Quincy Jones. In the first installment of the second series, Alfonso Ribeiro and Tatyana Ali performed as their Fresh Prince character (Carlton and Ashley Banks) in the crossing story "Dog Catchers".

James Avery (Phillip Banks) later in the squadron acted as a facilitator in the hit movie "Love on a One-Way Street". During the fourth installment of "My Pest Friend's Wedding" James Avery and Daphne Maxwell Reid (Vivian Banks) performed as guests as Dr. Maxwell Stanton's parent (Stanton was performed by Ribeiro). Avery and Reid both photographed the Ribeiro Fresh Prince character's family.

In the same scene, Joseph Marcell, who performed the witty Geoffrey Butler on Fresh Prince, appears as acting secretary of state. NBC Productions collaborated with the Stuffed Dog Company and Quincy Jones Entertainment (later Quincy Jones-David Salzman Entertainment 1993) to produce the film. Following its release for distribution in 1994, the programme was marketed by Warner Bros. Television, which continued to broadcast the programme around the world (although NBCUniversal owns the copyrights to the series).

The WGN America was the first duct to purchase the 1997 serie, and TBS purchased the serie a year later, in 1998; both ducts wore the serie until the autumn of 2003, though TBS had repurchased the 2007 serie. After TBS bought Fresh Prince back in 2007, the preamps were shortened and the title track deleted and substituted by the final musical title that was used as the final topic of the show.

The TBS programme ran until September 2014, when Viacom Media Networks regained the right to the show. Until 2006 the WB was part of WPIX-TV. From 2006 to 2009 the show ran on Nick at Nite and switched to Disney XD. Disney XD purchased the show's title in July 2009, although it was quickly shifted from Prime Times to Late Nights, and only Season 1 to 3 shows will be broadcast, mainly because these shows are more suitable for young audiences as they don't contain as many seasoned topics, sexually explicit contents and powerful speech as later eps.

The ABC Family (now known as Freeform ) purchased the show in September 2008, although all 148 events were aired; initially aired only on Saturday night, the show was included in ABC Family's day of the week program at the end of 2009. Disney/ABC's show copyrights ended on 29 September 2014. Vitacom Media Networks got the show back.

Viacom Media Networks also handed the show over to BET in October 2014, and it would also be broadcast on Centric. VH1 will also resume the production run. Launched on November 2, 2015, the show began broadcasting on Family Channel in Canada. The Netflix franchise was added in the UK and Ireland on 1 January 2017.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air began to broadcast again in Nickelodeon's Nick at Nite in 2014. By 2017, the serial began from the beginning on the 5* channels in the UK. The Warner Home Video has published the full season 1 through 6 on DVD in Region 1. Squadrons 5 to 6 were published in Region 2 in Germany and in the full box set range in Great Britain.
