The PT Lion Mentari Airlines, which operates as Lion Air, is an Indonesian low-cost airline. One of Indonesia's largest low-cost carriers. sspan class="mw-headline" id="History">History[edit] Lion Air was founded in 1999 and has experienced enormous expansion in recent years, having purchased over 100 planes and ordered nearly 500 more. Boeing has consistently broke record orders for the world' biggest planes, including its $24 billion order for 234 Airbus A320s and its $22.4 billion order for 230 Boeing rival planes.

2 ] In June 2017, the carrier concluded a contract with the US airplane maker Boeing for 50,737 Max 10 commercial airliners valued at 6.24 billion dollars. It is Boeing's second biggest client. 5 ] It had once been criticised for bad operation in areas such as planning and security, although measures were taken to enhance its security: on 16 June 2016, the EU lift its flight bans on Lion Air into Europe's sky.

January 2012, the Department of Transportation said it had penalized Lion Air for having held some of its airline planes and crews in custody of crystalline metamphetamine in recent month. At the end of 2011 Muhammad Nasri and two other co-pilots were detained at a Tangerang celebration; in early 2012 a flight driver with crystalline Meth was captured in Makassar.

On February 4, 2012, another Lion Air pilots was detained after a urine test for the use of Methamphetamine was passed; he was supposed to be flying the Surabaya-Makassar-Balikpapan-Surabaya mission hour later. Since January 2014[update], Lion Air has served a combined 120 destinations: Boeing's Lion Air client codes are GP, which appear in the name of the airplane as a prefix, such as 737-8GP and 737-9GPER.

It was Lion Air's first client for the Boeing 737's biggest version, the 737-900ER, for which it placed an order in 2005. Lion Air on May 26, 2005 entered into a pre-contract with Boeing for the acquisition of up to 60 Boeing 737 Next Generation jets worth $3.9 billion at listed price.

In July 2005, Lion Air acknowledged its order and became the first Boeing 737-900ER client with 30 fixed order orders and 30 additional flight option contracts, which were later turned into fixed orders. Boeing shipped the first 737-900ER to Lion Air on April 27, 2007. Specifically, the plane was supplied in a two-color system combining Lion Air's Lion Air emblem on the fin and Boeing's Dreamliner finish on the body.

Lion Air began to expand in the 2000s and became a serious competitor to Garuda Indonesia for internal flights in Indonesia. Lion Air will increase Indonesia's internal air traffic by 41 per cent by mid-2015. Garuda's low-cost Citilink followed (8.9 per cent) and Lion Air's Wings Air short-haul services (4.7 per cent).

The Lion Air flight 386, a Boeing 737-200, went down on takeoff on January 14, 2002 and was depreciated at Sultan Syarif International Airport Kasim II.
