The once supporting pillar of the aircraft family, the Boeing 737-200 range, has since been decommissioned, here at London Heathrow Airport in 1983. Soon after the Second World War, several small privately owned carriers were established in Malta.

These included The Malta Instone Airline, BAS (Malta) Ltd and Malta Airlines. The first two firms fused in 1947 to become Air Malta Ltd. in intense competitive conditions. Finally, Malta Airlines took over the operation of Air Malta Ltd. in 1951 and carried it on through an arrangement with BEA until 1973.

Air Malta Ltd. owns a groundhandling business named MAS, Malta Aviation Services, with its properties, personnel and facilities. During the early 1970''s, the Malta authorities named Albert Mizzi as president of the carrier and asked an intergovernmental air carrier to help build an air carrier.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), then considered the best Asian air company, was picked and a new air company was founded. Its name was similar to that of its predecessor, Air Malta Co Ltd, and was founded on 31 March 1973. The BEA was asked to resume its Malta operation, this year for Air Malta, until Air Malta's maiden voyage on 1 April 1974.

Malta Airlines and Malta Aviation Services were both acquired by the authorities and the remaining shareholders received a stake in Air Malta Co. Work commenced on Air Malta with 2 Boeing 720Bs let from Malta to serve Rome, Tripoli, London, Manchester, Frankfurt and Paris. Later, she purchased 3 more Boeing 720B and purchased the two originals.

Air Malta purchased 3 new Boeing 737-200s in 1986 and ordered the first Airbus A 320 in 1987. Air Malta optioned another Airbus in 1989 and three more Boeing 737-300s and four Avro RJ70s were ordered in 1992 for the Catania and Palermo services and for new services such as Tunis and Monastir.

Following the opening of Malta International in 1992, Air Malta CargoSystems established Air Malta CargoSystems, which covers air freight traffic with Air Malta aircraft. Air Malta opened a freight centre at the Malta International Airports in 1994. During this period, a codeshare arrangement also began with Trans World Airlines.

Air Malta launched a Air Malta exchange scheme between 2002 and 2007 to convert all Airbus A319 and A320s. The number of interlining ticket arrangements with other IATA carriers was approximately 190. The Association of European Airline's May 2006 survey of the quarter shows that Air Malta is the least loss of luggage.

Often in winters, the carrier rents planes to maximize revenue in the off-season. For example, in September 2007, Air Malta signed two contracts with Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, in which Air Malta hired two Airbus planes to Etihad Airways for the winters from 1 September 2007 and provided operating assistance for another Airbus A 320 rented by Etihad Airways.

Air Malta signed a lease for an Airbus A320 Sky airline in Chile in January and February 2009. Air Malta again rented an Airbus A320 to Sky Airline in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014. Air Malta went through a renaming exercise in 2012 which created some disputes as the title on planes and signs only includes Malta without the words Air.

Air Malta insists that this is not a renaming and the full name of the carrier will remain Air Malta. First aircraft to show the new colors was the Airbus A320-200 9H-AEN at Malta International Airshow 2012. Air Malta has had no deadly casualties since its establishment in 1973.
