Boeing is a US multi-national enterprise that develops, produces and markets aeroplanes, rotary-wing aeroplanes, missile systems, satellite systems and missile systems throughout the globe.... It also offers lease and equipment maintenance. It is the second biggest defence contract manufacturer in the globe in terms of sales in 2015[5] and the biggest US exporting nation after dollars.

6 ][7] The Boeing share is listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. On 15 June 1916, one of the two "B&W" sea planes constructed with the support of George Conrad Westervelt, a US Navy marine pilot, made its debut in the United States. After flying a Curtiss plane, Boeing and Westervelt agreed to construct the B&W sea plane.

The Boeing purchased a Glenn Martin "Flying Birdcage" floatplane (so named because all the guys held it together) and was made to float by Glenn Martin himself. Soon Boeing fell into the bird cage and when Martin told Boeing that spare parts would not be available for a few month, Boeing realised that he could construct his own aircraft at that period.

Him and his boyfriend Cdr. G.C. Westervelt arranged to make a better plane and soon made the B&W seaplane. This first Boeing aircraft was mounted in a lakefront hanger on the northeastern shores of Seattle's Lake Union. Most of Boeing's early aircraft were floatplanes. The USA proclaimed Germany to be at war and entered the First World War on April 6, 1917. On May 9, 1917, the enterprise became the Boeing Plane Airpany.

When the USA entered the US Army, Boeing knew that the US Navy needed water aircraft for schooling. Boeing sent two new Model Cs to Pensacola, Florida, where the aircraft were used by the Navy. 18 ] The firm relocated its activities to a major former shipyard called Boeing Plant 1, situated on the lower Duwamish River in Washington State.

Boeing competed against Curtiss in 1923 to create a chase aircraft for the U.S. Army Air Service. Even though Curtiss first completed his own aircraft and won the tender, Boeing developed its PW-9 fighting aircraft further. This aircraft, together with the Boeing P-12/F4B fighter,[21] made Boeing a leader in the production of combat aircraft over the next ten years.

In the same year Boeing founded an air carrier called Boeing Air Transport, which a year later fused with Pacific Air Transport and the Boeing Airplane Company. 22 ] The institution in 1929 denatured its repute to United Aircraft and Transport Corporation and took over Pratt & Whitney, Hamilton Standard Propeller Company and Chance Vought.

In 1930 United bought the National Air Transport. The Boeing 247, the first truly state-of-the-art commercial jet, was presented in 1933. 247 was an all-metal low-wing plane that was much quicker, more secure and lighter to operate than other commercial airliners. It was, for example, the first twin-engine commercial airplane that could be flown with one motor.

The first 59 Boeing planes were designed solely for the operation of its own affiliate United Airline. In 1934, the Air Mail Act banned airline and manufacturer from working under one roof, dividing the business into three smaller entities - Boeing Airplane Company, UNITED Lines, and Unitedcraft Corporation, the forerunner of United Technologies.

Consequently, William Boeing divested his stake and abandoned Boeing. In 1933, Clairmont "Claire" L. Egtvedt, who had become Boeing CEO in 1933, also became CEO. 25 ][26] Work on Boeing Plant 2 began in 1936 to start producing large contemporary airplanes. Boeing 314 Clipper made its maiden voyage in June 1938.

She was the biggest civilian airplane of her era with a seating of 90 persons for daily and 40 persons for evening use. Further voyages were then opened, so that Pan Am soon took the Boeing 314 to targets all over the hemisphere. Boeing finished work on its Stratoliner Model 307 in 1938.

It was the world's first pressurised cab air transporter able to travel at an elevation of 6,100 meters (20,000 feet) - above most adverse climatic events. In the late 1940s and 50s Boeing designed and built army planes such as the Stratofortress B-47 Stratojet[29] and B-52s. In the early 1950' Boeing used corporate funding to design the 367-80 fighter plane demonstration that resulted in the Stratotanker KC-135 and the Boeing 707.

A few were manufactured at the Boeing plants in Wichita, Kansas, which operated from 1931 to 2014. By the mid -1950s, the technologies were well on the way, which gave Boeing the ability to design and produce new product lines. The first was the short-range rocket, which was used to catch hostile planes. The Cold War had become a reality by that point, and Boeing used its short-range rocket technologies to design and construct an international rocket.

Boeing began delivering its 707 in 1958, the first passenger plane in the United States, in reaction to the British De Havilland Comet, the French Sud Aviation Caravelle and the Soviet Tupolev Tu-104, which were the world's first generations of passengerplanes. Some years later Boeing added a second model of this plane, the Boeing 720, which was slightly quicker and with less outreach.

The Vertol Aircraft Corporation was taken over by Boeing in 1960[31] and reorganised as the Vertol Aircraft Corporation. In 1961 Boeing was awarded the order to produce the S-IC section of the Saturn 5 missile, which is produced at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. Boeing presented another short- and medium-haul aircraft in 1967, the twin-engine 737.

In the meantime, it has become the best-selling airliner in the world. In 1968, the launch ceremony for the first 747-100 took place at the huge new Everett plant, about an hour's car ride from Boeing's Seattle house. One year later the plane made its maiden voyage. This 747 has an intracontinental reach and a greater seatacity than Boeing's existing one.

Also in the sixties Boeing designed hydrofoil boats. Whereas the naval hydro boats were decommissioned at the end of the 80s, the Boeing jet foils are still in use in Asia. The first 747, a four-engined long-range aircraft, made its first ever business trip with Pan American World Airways in January 1970. More than 1,500 Boeing 747s have already been supplied by the Group.

737th airliner. In the following years, airliners and their respective defence counterparts became the standard configuration of airline companies and the German Federal Armed Force. The Boeing had to introduce new planes and designed the Single-Aisle 747, the bigger twin-aisle 767 and improved version of the 737. One important spacecraft of these years was the Shuttle, to which Boeing added its Apollo period expertise in spacecraft.

While Boeing also contributed other aerospace related items, it was the first supplier for the International Space Station programme. Between the 767 and the 747, in April 1994 Boeing presented the most advanced airliner of its day, the twin-engine 777, with a seat capacity of 300 to 370 persons in a typically three-class concept.

777, the world's longest cruising twin-engine plane, was Boeing's first ever fly-by-wire system plane and was developed, among other things, in reaction to the entry of European Airbus into Boeing's established markets. The plane achieved an important landmark by being the first plane to be constructed entirely using computer-aided engineering (CAD).

The 777 was also the first plane to be ETOPS certificated for 180 minutes by the FAA when it was put into operation. 49 ] Also in the mid-1990s, the institution evolved the revised 737 release, known as the 737 Next-Generation or 737NG. The 737 is now the best-selling 737 in Boeing's fleet, and on April 20, 2006 revenues exceeded those of the Classic 737 with a follow-up order for 79 Southwest Airliness.

Boeing took over Rockwell's air, space and defence assets in 1996. Rockwell's businesses became a Boeing affiliate, called Boeing North American, Inc. Boeing and McDonnell Douglas fused in August 1997 in a US$13 billion share exchange in which Boeing was the remaining group. The McDonnell Douglas MD-95 was subsequently rebranded Boeing 717, and the MD-11 tripod was produced only in the cargo ship variant.

With the conclusion of the fusion, Boeing launched a new brand name, including the Boeing emblem and a stylised copy of the McDonnell Douglas icon deriving from the Douglas aircraft emblem of the seventies. Boeing decided in January 2000 to increase its footprint in another space segment of global space communication by acquiring Hughes Electronics.

54 ] Hughes Space and Communication Company, which had been a pioneer in the development of space communication. Boeing was defeated by its competitor Lockheed Martin on October 10, 2001 in a tough battle for the billion-dollar JSF deal. Boeing's X-32 acquisition was refused in favour of Lockheed's X-35 participant. The Boeing Group remains the main subcontractor of the International Space Station and has constructed several of the main component parts.

Boeing completed 757 manufacturing in 2004 after producing 1,050 planes. Boeing also announces this year that the 717, the last McDonnell Douglas-designed civilian plane, will stop producing in 2006. Boeing grounded against Airbus after several dozen years of successful business and in 2003 relinquished its leading position in the scheduled airline sector.

Several Boeing engagements were followed up and then cancelled, in particular the Sonic Cruiser, a suggested aircraft that would operate just below the acoustic velocity and shorten continental journey time by up to 20 per cent. The destiny of the aircraft was, however, marked by the changes in the civil aircraft sector following the September 11 terrorist attack and the resulting economic weakness and rise in the price of gas.

NASA chose Boeing as its production partner for the liquid-powered Ares I launcher on 18 August 2007. 69 ] The platform, built on both Apollo-Saturn and Space Shuttle technology, was to be built at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility near New Orleans, where Boeing built the S-IC section of the Saturn 5 missile in the sixties.

In May 2005, Boeing started the 777 freighter with an order from Air France. In November 2005, Boeing formally announces that it will be producing a bigger 747 model, the 747-8, in two different variants, starting with the Freighter model with fixed orders for two hauliers. The US Navy also awarded Boeing the start-up order for the P-8 Poseidon Multimission Maritimecraft, a U-boat War Control plane.

In addition, it was awarded orders for the 737 AEW&C "Wedgetail "s. It has also launched new 737 models with expanded reach. In the second half of 2005, the 777-200LR Worldliner launched a well-received worldwide demo trip, demonstrating its ability to travel further than any other airliner.

The 777-200LR broke the 777-200LR on November 10, 2005, setting a global precedent for the longest non-stop outing. Boeing was awarded a $35 billion order for 179 KC-46 U.S. Air Force Tanker in February 2011. Boeing, together with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), was the main contractor for the US military's Future Combat Systems programme.

73 ] The FCS programme was discontinued in June 2009 and all other schemes were included in the BCT modernisation programme. 74 ] Boeing cooperates withSAIC in the context of the BCT modernisation programme like the FCS programme, but the US Army will have a greater share in the production of base cars and will only outsource equipment to others.

Boeing's Boeing Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Harry Stonecipher resigned in March 2005. According to Boeing, an in-house inquiry found a "consensual" relation between Stonecipher and a woman manager that "was contrary to Boeing's Code of Conduct" and "would affect his capacity to run the company". James A. Bell held the position of Chairman, President and Chief Operating Officer (in additional to his usual role as CFO of Boeing) until Jim McNerney was appointed Chairman, President and Chief Operating Officer on June 30, 2005.

By the end of the seventies, the USA had an almost monopolistic position in the field of large civil aircrafts (LCA). During 2004, the EU and the US decided to consider a possible review of the 1992 EU-US agreement, provided that it covers all types of subsidisation, notably for the Boeing 787, the first new Boeing aeroplane in 14 years.

The US alleged that Airbus had breached a 1992 bi-lateral agreement by receiving from several EU administrations what Boeing considered to be "unfair" subsidy. The Airbus response was a sui generis appeal, complaining that Boeing had also breached the agreement when it was granted US government fiscal relief. Boeing Yellowstone Projekt is the company's replacement business venture for its complete civilian aviation fleet.

Among the new technology to be implemented are compound airframe structures, more electric power supply system (hydraulic system reduction) and more fuel-efficient turboprop power plants such as the Pratt & Whitney PW1000G Geared Turboprop, General Electric GEnx, CFM International LEAP56 and Rolls-Royce Trent 1000. Yellowstone " means the technology, while "Y1" to "Y3" means the airplane itself.

Boeing petitioned on 27 April 2017 to dispose of it at a price of $19.6 million each below its manufacturing costs of $33.2 million. The US International Trade Commission (USITC) determined on 9 June 2017 that US manufacturing could be under threat. The US Department of Commerce (DoC) watched a 220% subsidy on 26 September and will withdraw funds on this basis.

At the World Trade Organization on 10 January 2018, the Canada authorities lodged a petition against the USA. The four USITC Commissars on 26 January 2018 agreed that US industries were not under threat and that no customs orders would be enacted, thereby repealing the tariffs introduced. Boeing refused to lodge an appeals against the decision on 22 March.
