New York Jets and their NFL Uniforms (1960)
The New York Jets have been active since their beginnings in 1960 as New York Titans, first as members of the American League and the Super Bowl III Championship, then since 1970 as part of the National League. This is a brief review of some of their many looks in black and blue, from more than 50 games of New York and New Jersey pro soccer, from their naked beginnings on the long gone polo ground to their latest features in the new MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands.....
Well, as most people know, the jets didn't actually begin as the jets. Wearing cyan hats with a golden strip in the centre but no logos on the sides. In 2007, a contemporary titanium recoil uniforms was launched and has been used by the squad several times since, alternating either shirts in black or red with golden trousers.
They were renamed "Jets" by their new group of owners under the leadership of Sonny Werblin and also switched their colours to either of them. Jets' uniforms were originally in home uniforms and included shirts with greens and strips. At the top the arms were blank and held greens, while individual greens were placed above and below the numbering.
Initially the arms were from just above the arm to the arm were verdant. The numbers on the front and back of the jersey as well as the players' name on the back were in plain red. His trousers were dressed in black, with two strips of black on his legs, divided by a strip of red.
Our stockings were striped red with red and striped red with red and blue with red. In the first year, the classical Jets were released under their new name. His street costume showed both leotards and trousers with leotards. There was a strip of grass on the back, the arms were lined with red and blue numbers and the arms were lined with red and blue numbers, while a strip of red was placed higher on the shoulder.
Front and back had numbers in red, while players' nicknames were also marked in red. His trousers were dressed in black, with two strips of black on his legs, divided by a strip of red. Our stockings were quite warm and had alternate strips of grass and grass, although they were mostly grass above.
For the first time this year, the classical jet emblem appeared on the sides of the crash helmet, the year the squad relocated to the new Shea Stadium in Flushing, NY. Instead of the existing short-lived logotype, it replaces a verdant area with "JETS" in plain text. Most of the new design was predominantly red with accents of red, although this pattern was to be inverted the following year.
These helmets also had two central dark strips of grass which, for the first year in the team's existence, bound a blank one. Otherwise the home and street uniform remains the same and will last for about 15 years. In 1965, the JETS jet sports hat with the classic blue emblem and "NY JETS" in silver with a soccer ball in a pointed dark red ball was launched, as shown here.
Designed to last for the remainder of the AFL life of the jets and until the end of the 1977 NFL series. The jets with their blank uniform became the first AFL crew to capture a global title when they defeated the NFL's Baltimore Colts, 16-7, in the Super Bowl III at the Orange Bowl in Miami on January 12, 1969.
Snell hurried for 121 yards and a jet hit, and Joe Namath passed 17 of 28 for 206 to receive MVP awards for the victory he infamously made. In 1978 the Jets made a drastic alteration to their uniform, accentuated by the introduction of a new celly coloured mask with a face mask.
Also a new logotype was introduced with the brand "JETS" in italic-white letters and a ultrasonic beam stretching from the letters "J" to the front. New Jets' home jersey was dressed in ecru with numbers in front, back and shoulder and players' name on the back in ecru.
Their collars were blank, while their arms had two blank strips divided by a strip of grass. The trousers were dressed in pure crimson with a strip of crimson grass on the leg, while the top of the trousers was dressed in crimson crimson with crimson grass on the top. Jets also had their last match ever at Shea Stadium in 1983. Jersey of the new jets clothing was street jersey whit with numbers on the front, back and shoulder and players name on the back in gree.
Their collars were crimson whereas their arms had two crimson strips divided by a crimson one. The trousers were dressed in pure crimson with a strip of crimson grass on the leg, while the top of the trousers was dressed in crimson crimson with crimson grass on the top. In 1990 the jets' uniform got some smaller changes. Masks were added to the face of the hardhat and the "JETS"-logo was also framed in dark.
On the jersey, there are also grey strips in blue, also on the sleeve and collars, as well as numbers and lettering. On both sides, the greens striped on the trousers were also bordered in dark. On the underside the stockings stayed blank, but were now blank grey with two blank strips on the top.
During this period, the changeover to Jets street uniform took place mostly with the use of decorative strips in the form of blacks, which were added to the strips of grass on both the jersey and the shorts. The numbers and players' nicknames on the jersey were also marked in dark. From 1990 to 1996, the jets were wearing a pair of shorts in ecru with street shirts in cream.
You were also wearing uniforms on the street until the end of 1997, your last year with the uniforms on. For a 17-12 victory against Cincinnati in 1993, the Jets were wearing a custom reverse hat. On the occasion of the 25-year jubilee of the Super Bowl III jets championship, the crash helmet was used.
Jet's classical emblem was placed on the side of the normal blue face mask, although there were no streaks in the centre. These kits were similar to the 1963 jets' vintage shirts and also had a memorial badge on the front, below the shoulders on the front.
When the jets were celebrating the NFL's 75-year jubilee, two blank strips and a strip of grass were added to the crimson crest of the NFL's blue NFL Helm with the classical Jet logos for next season's game. These kits listened to the 1963 jets' initial greens and also had a NFL 75-year jubilee memorial patches attached to the front under the front shoulders of the helm.
Parcells took over the jets in 1997, and one of the things he did on the helmet after his first campaign was to retrieve the classic jet's blank hood, albeit with a slightly updated, curved logotype and a new face mask. It was a more dark woodland shade than the Kelly shade used in the sixties and seventies.
Jets have kept this style ever since. Jets' "new" home outfit included shirts with greens and strips. These were similar to the 60s and 70s costumes, but with a dark greener tint. There was a strip of grass on the shoulder, which was divided from the remainder of the jersey by a broader strip of snow.
Jets also features a classical Jets Helm badge on the front of the jersey, directly under the shoulders. The other numbers and characters were blank. His trousers were dressed in black, with two strips of black on his legs, divided by a strip of red. My stockings were red and my top was red.
Jets' "new" street costume included leotards and trousers, both with blue streaks. These were similar to the 1960s/1970s costumes, but with a more dark greenish tint. There was a strip of grass on the back, the arms were lined with red and blue numbers and the arms were lined with red and blue numbers, while a strip of red was placed higher on the back. The Jets Helm was also on the front of the jersey, just under the jersey's right side and under the jersey's right side.
The other numbers and characters were gray. His trousers were dressed in black, with two strips of black on his legs, divided by a strip of red. My stockings were red and my top was red. In 2002, the first modification of the reworked jets street uniforms took place when the stockings were changed.
There was a transition from whites with greens on the top to whites with two greens on the bottom. In 2002 the Jets extended their home squad with the addition of optional trousers. On the other hand, the shirts had two strips of snow divided by a strip of snow. Soches began as normal house stockings - blank with top color blue - but later became blank with two blank strips of blue.
In 2003 the Jets extended their street squad with the addition of the optional dark brown trousers. Whites stayed the same, but greens had two whites striped apart by a greens strip. Most of the street stockings were the same as the normal street stockings and were mostly pure black with a couple of strips of green.
Several New York jets in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio honor several of the club's looks during their more than five decade tenure in the AFL and NFL.
