Yiaomi Mi Notebook Air 13.3 2018 (i5-8250U MX150) review

One of the most important reasons for the import of a machine directly from China is usually the low cost of the machine. Since the notebook is not yet available outside China, there are several hurdles to overcoming, including the fact that the whole purchase must be exclusively judged by other individuals, as there is no way to take a close look at the notebook in a local shop.

In general, the Mi Notebook Air equipped with the MX150 is quite respectable. In spite of the thin and dense case, it is able to perform brief bursts with high processor power, and the graphics processor power is sufficient for many of today's gaming applications. Unfortunately, there was too much hot weather and too much stress, and the Mi Notebook Air would certainly have benefited from an upgrade and modification of the case.

Hot surfaces, heat rejection and fast power degradation of the processor are clear signs of a chassis overloaded by its highly efficient internals. Choosing the 10W MX150 SKU didn't help much either, and if you need more power, the 15-inch would probably be the better one.

Although the 13-inch light screen was very good, it was also very shiny and strongly reflecting outside thanks to its exterior styling. Our reader's who are planning to connect the notebook to an outside screen mainly fixed should keep an eye on the 30 Hz limit of the HDMI-Ports. 13 inch alternates fitted with an X150 are scarce at the Mi Air asking for the same value, which makes this notebook much more interesting.

Lenovo's IdeaPad 320S (13-inch, core i5-8250U) was significantly lower in all GPU and CPU benchmarking, and the HP Envy 13 was able to keep up with the Air in terms of GPU power (thanks to its MX150 GPU), in terms of processor power, thanks to its older core i7-7500U dual-core processor, and achieved 32% less in Cinebench's multi-core test.

So if you are looking for an inexpensive and somewhat playable 13-inch sub-notebook and don't care about the potentially risky Chinese imports, the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air could be the ideal complement. We strongly recommend prospective purchasers to also take a look at the bigger 15-inch Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro (Core i5-8250U, GeForce MX150) with a much more efficient cooler system.
