The introduction of secret fare promises reduced-price travel that travellers won't find anywhere else. Hopper, the ''Airfare Prrediction and Booking Application'', has implemented a function that offers travellers fare offers that they cannot find on any other reservation service sent to their telephone.

Whilst pushing alerts has become an important resource for many tour operators, Hopper says it's the first large scale leveraging the tech to provide this type of special fare they call secret fare. Hopper also offers iPhone and iPad customers the opportunity to receive pushed alerts on their device that, according to Hopper, include select worldwide fare offers that could be up to 35 per cent cheaper than the fare offered on other itineraries.

"We' re going to disrupt the class in the most traditionally way, we're going to create something the other boys can't," said Fred Lalonde, Hopper's CEO. These fares come from the Hopper partner carriers, such as Air Canada, LATAM and Air China, and cover some 60,000 flights to key cities such as Tokyo, Paris, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro and Costa Rica.

Mr Hopper said that the main emphasis of Secretary Fares will be on overseas flights, although some local fare will be blended and more overseas carriers will join as partner this year. "It makes a great deal of difference for the carrier because on Hopper, for example, folks follow their journey up to 140 flights before take-off.

It gives carriers a great deal of free space to give them their own prices," Mr Lalonde said. Mr Hopper said that carriers are interested in working with the carrier because the application retains full tariff control, and if an carrier offered this type of rebate on the open web, it would potentially lead to a tariff war as competitors would recognise the rebate and adjust the rate.

Hopper said during recent month's public tests of Secret Fares that both airline and consumer response was encouraging. "The early figures say that if a consumer sees one of these tariffs, he is twice as likely to buy from us even if he does not buy it.

Hopper's advantages are that it prepares the user to react well to pushed alerts, which account for 90 per cent of revenue, and it has an extended flight reservation information base, which it uses to make its fare forecasts.
