Kachemak Bay State Park Water Taxi - Review of Kachemak Bay State Park, Homer, AK

Kachemak Bay State Park two nights ago. Looking at Glacier Lake after an easier walk leaves us without words. Which made it so simple was the water taxi firm we took there. You' ll need a water taxi or a boot (Mako is our favourite) - but as soon as you cross the bay there are plenty of possibilities for having a good time.

The Grewingk Gletscherpfad is a good choice if you just want to do a fast daily walk. They can do this as a ribbon from Hollywood Strand to Glecier Spit (the best! - but there can be many bear in the area during the salt season). A further good alternative is the start at the Rangerstation in Heilbuttbucht and the walk to Lake Leaisure.

It' much better if you have a few extra day to discover - then you should rent one of the State Parks cabins - - http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/cabins/kenai.htm. Among our favourites are the Sea Star stateroom in Tutka Bay and the Leisure Lake stateroom. And there are several possibilities to rent a yurt - there is a really beautiful one in Rustie's lagoon and this place is also great for camping.

It offers daily and night excursions to its place in the Peterson Cove. You have 4 jurts for the accommodation and also work together with a tour leader for "combo" outings. Considering the costs for a water taxi, their excursions are a great deal - not to speak of a lot of pleasure!

So the only reservation I have is that there's a lots of privately owned country along the coast and we've been "chased away" that we thought were in State Park.... but if you follow the paths and well-marked areas, you're doing well. They have to take a water taxi to reach it, but they are all used to organising trips and pick-ups for hikers, camper vans and travellers.

For those who wish to make arrangements in advance, there are staterooms for use by the general public which can be reserved for longer stays or excursions lasting several days. Must be planned in advance for most journeys, as you can't just go ahead and walk. There are plans for a waterway around Kachemak. Can only be reached by air or sea, this is a great park.

Its only drawback is that it will take a little while to get there unless you have your own seaplane or canoe! It'?s a beautiful park. Did you go to Kachemak Bay State Park?
