Fly in Alaska! - The Citation is CJ3, Citabria and C172.

I had the chance in March 2014 to see Alaska for my air travel consultation with a boyfriend in a Citation CJ3. The flight to Alaska has some of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen. Hillsboro (HIO) was our starting point for the last stage to Anchorage. The Citation CJ3 flight on the coastline and not the somewhat short course over the sea provided breathtaking vistas with almost limitless view.

After living in the northwest in the past, I always loved to fly through the mountain, especially Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood, today it was no anomaly. One year after the explosion of Mt. St. Helens, with the biggest mudslide there ever was, I flew deep over it. The Malaspina Glacier, one of the biggest along the way, is supplied by the Seward Glacier just off Yakutat Alaska.

When we flew to Anchorage, we met low skies for the first part of our journey. In this area the rain is often generated when the cool humidity from the noise moves over the warm country and condensates. I had hoped for good downhill riding with all the hills in Alaska. Alyeska is the only place near Anchorage that is a relatively small area.

But after a few races and great prospects I chose to fly! Another of the best ways to discover Alaska by plane is with the Taiildragger, especially as I miss piloting on pistes with lots of dirt and groom. Tracy Kraun, a great trainer with a lot of taildragging experiences.

On the way to the north-east we saw to our right the White Mountains, on our plane to Willow AK (PAUO) International Airfield to make a landing. Choosing Willow International I chose it because it is next to Willow Lake, the main launch of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race that started the next one.

Iditarod Air Force - a volunteer team that supports shuttles and provides support for the run. And it was great to make bike and three-point lands with so many taildraggers and choppers in the type. I am approaching after approaching nearly 700 aerodromes, and what better way is there to append an aerodrome than Good Bay?

Along the way we could observe the reflections of the White Mountains in the sea. It' s very cool waters in the sounds, therefore the icy one in the forefront. To fly over such chilly waters was a great stimulus to recall the warmth of the carburettor and to watch the land!

This is a great opportunity to do Alaska! It was planned to fly to Willow to follow the launch of the event on Sunday 2 March. On the way the star gear was shallow - so 2 hour later I was in a wagon at Willow Lake. In the beginning there were many nations present, with both sex musclemen all competing in an astonishing 1049 mil run with awesome dog crews!

Launch is a separate group. Folks are bringing along icecream marquees, grills and much more to follow the starting line of the game. They were so agitated that they jumped and were prepared to take part in this gruelling game. Whilst at Fairbanks International I found a place where I could hire a Cessna 172 for a fast low-altitude through the area before going back to Anchorage.

Like Anchorage, Fairbanks has many airplanes, but few rentals. Found a small and well serviced navy in the Warbelows flying school belonging to Andrew Warbelow. Shane Jones, one of her CFOs, was asked to accompany me on a check out in one of her 172s.

You know how to fly the aircraft down to -30 F. Each of their hold-down devices has a socket for motor and dashboard heating and a large preheater. There is a snow-covered airstrip at the airfield for use by skiing aircraft! Returning to Anchorage, the views of Denali were really stunning.

When you get your quarters, I strongly suggest you explore Alaska. No matter whether you are flying your own aircraft in our most northern state, chartering a jet or renting a jet to travel in Alaska, you will be treated to a fantastic time. Our return to San Diego was very pleasant and you could watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

The CJ3 was flown with FL450 and we could see a lot of flashes - between us! CJ3' height capability enabled us to confidently climb over the storm and avoid a change in orbit.
