Chapter 2 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988

"Void carriage" means a use of a power-driven vehicle specifically conceived, built and not only modified for the use of a disabled or defective individual and used exclusively by or on behalf of such a disabled or defective individual; "driving licence" means a license granted by a relevant authorities in accordance with the provisions of this chapter which entitles the individual named therein to travel as a student, a power-driven or a power-driven individual of a particular category or a particular inscription; the term "invalid carriage" means the use of a power-driven or power-driven individual of a particular category or a particular invention; the term "invalid carriage" means the use of a "driving licence" means the use of a power-driven or power-driven individual of a particular category or invention by a driver of a particular category or invention, as defined in this article;

"cab " means any power-driven craft designed or modified to transport no more than six persons, other than the rider, for commercial purposes; "motor vehicle" means any power-driven craft other than a means of transportation, bus, cylinder, tractors, motorcycles or illegal means of conveyance; "motorcycle" means a two-wheeled craft, including a removable sidecar with an additional rear axle mounted on the craft;

"automotive vehicle" or "vehicle" means any mechanical powered vehicles suitable for use on the road, whether the driving force is transferred to the road from an outside or inside sources and whether it comprises a frame to which no bodywork is mounted and a towed implement; however, it does not comprise a rigid rail mounted vehicles, or a specific types of vehicles suitable only for use in a plant or other closed space, or vehicles with fewer than four tyres with a cylinder capacity of not more than 4[twenty-five cc];

1 [twenty-five cc];" "bus" means any road transport instrument designed or modified to transport more than six passengers, with the exception of the chauffeur; "owner" means a party in whose name a road transport instrument is registered and, if that party is a minor, that party's legal guardian, and, in respect of a road transport instrument which is the object of a leasing sale, a contract*, a leasing contract or a mortgage contract, the party who is in the possession of the road transport instrument under that contract;

"Approval " means an authorization granted by a State or regional transportation agency, or by an agency required in that name under this Act, to use a car as a road traffic car; "prescribed" means required by the provisions of this Act; "private official vehicle" means a car designed or modified to carry more than six passengers other than the driver and normally used by or on behalf of the owner of that car for the carriage of passengers for or in relation to his commerce or craft, other than for commercial use, but not including a car intended for use in relation to his craft or craft, and normally used by or on behalf of the owner of that car for the carriage of passengers for or in relation to his craft or craft;

"The term "public place" means a straight or narrow lane, a path or any other place, whether or not a through lane, to which the general public has a right of admission and covers any place or stall where persons are taken up or set down using a carriage; "public place " means any means of transport used or adapted for the commercial transport of persons and comprises a maximum car, a motorised pallet truck, a contracted coach and a platform coach;

"Recorded axle mass " means, for the axis of a rolling stock, the mass of the wheel axles attested and recorded by the registration authorities as acceptable for that axis; "registration authority" means an administration authorised to regulate rolling stock in accordance with the provisions of this chapter; "stage wagon" means a rolling stock designed or modified to transport more than six persons other than the rider for commercial purposes at distinct tariffs payable by or for individuals either for the whole trip or for legs of the trip;

"Government of the State" in respect of any part of the Union shall mean the administrator designated in accordance with the provisions of Art. 239 of the Constitution; the central government or a government of the State; any road transport undertaking set up in accordance with Section 3 of the Road Transport Enterprise Act 1950 (64 of 1950); any local authority or body or undertaking belonging to or under the control of the central government or one or more governmental authorities or of the central government and one or more governmental authorities.

For the purpose of this provision, "road haulage service" means a contractual traffic of cars which carry persons or goods, or both, by road for remuneration; "tourist vehicle" means a contractual traffic built or adapted to, and fitted with, the equipment and maintenance of, the car according to the specification laid down in that name;

"towing vehicle" means a self-propelled craft which is not designed to bear a burden (with the exception of machinery which is not used for propulsion), but does not include a street cylinder; "road signs" means any signal, caution, signpost, guide, mark on the street or any other device intended to inform, guide or direct the driver of a craft;

"trailers " means any vehicles other than semi-trailers and sidecars to be towed by a road or rail car; "transport vehicles" means official vehicles, goods vehicles, buses of training establishments or personal vehicles; "unladen weight" means the total mass of a truck or of trailers, together with all the usual working gear used with the truck or trailers, but with the exception of the mass of a chauffeur or escort; "unladen weight" means the mass of a truck or of trailers;

and, where use is made of alternate parts or superstructures, the kerb mass of the craft means the mass of the craft with the most heavy of these alternate parts or superstructures;'mass' means the initial mass transferred from the wheel of a craft to the ground on which the craft stands.
