October 2008 was October and without a steady Job to hold me tight, I bought a plane ticket around the world through Asia, Europe and the United States. Having bought a non-stop ticket, I only had to e-mail my Melbourne office to change my flight schedule.

To me, a ticket around the world gives me the liberty for such meetings and possibilities of opening and for a fraction of the cost of buying round-trip air transport from a point of use. Around the world ticketing can turn out to be what prevents traditionally live agencies from becoming duplicated in an on-line driven ticketing world.

Although such fares are available on airline sites, according to Stefanie Harms, Student Flights Melbourne Student Flight advisor, the best offers are those that allow agencies to put together your own fares by routing and rigging to produce tailor-made fares around the world. "It makes a great deal of difference for Australia's travelers to buy a round-the-world ticket because it allows them to creep into many different places with just one flight.

You can often use a single ticket to go to Asia, Europe and North or South America at a similar cost to a roundtrip ticket to Europe and much less than a roundtrip ticket to South America," she says. Those rates vary with each seasons and must be bargained with a trustworthy tour operator, but currently the airline companies in Switzerland offer a rate of just under $2,000 in Asia, Europe and America (about $400 plus taxes if you want to go to South America), while the STA makes a journey to Los Angeles, New York, Moscow and Singapore for $1,699, but you must find your own way through the US and between Moscow and Singapore.

By way of contrast, STA offers flights from Melbourne or Sydney to London for $1,199 or New York for $1,263, but the circumnavigation includes these two towns as well as stops in California, another major city in Europe and Asia for $1,699. The Flight Centre offers $2,063 for a round trip ticket from Sydney to Rio De Janiero in July, but a round-the-world ticket with airline companies in Asia, Europe and Brazil will earn you $2,382.

In the high seasons for the main Europe summer, for example, a flight back from Melbourne to Berlin can cost between $2,000 and $2,500 (depending on when you book) and a flight back from Melbourne to New York could cost between $1,500 and $2,200. "This way, you may be able to get several towns and counties on your ticket for just a little more than you would be paying for a trip back to one town," says Harms.

Contrary to conventional fares, around the world there are no peaks or seasonality limitations on air fares, i.e. they are usually available all year round. Frequently these fares are organized with the place of destination and point of departures depending on available, so you have to make your own way between them. They can be the best parts of your trip because they compel you to make your own maps outside of prescribed routes.

As Joanna Luke, the Flight Centre's circumnavigation management assistant, says, when travelers see what they can do with these cards and see that more and more towns are looking to take on their holiday, she often finds out. Even though the distance travelled on circumnavigations around the world is considerable, it is also much less than it would be necessary for individual returns to achieve all these goals.

When we can put everything into a journey, it's certainly better than going around the world back and forth. To weigh up the ecological carbon print against the desire of man to see the world are issues that every traveler has to deal with.
