If you are renting land, the round-the-world tickets will either calculate a segments (depending on the continent) or kilometers (depending on the mileage). Well, I can give you an example from what I found for my route. My goal was to do an R&TW that covered North America (home base), South America and Asia.

However, there are no services between SA and Asia without a link on another mainland. One World' s Explorer, because it is continental and I could make Easter Island cheaper. Well, I suppose if you have a transfer to another planet, you'll be taken to the next higher program.

In order to get from South America to Asia, you have to drive either through the Pacific or through North America. In order to get from Asia to South America, one must travel either through Europe or North America (there is a plane from Africa, but it is not in the alliance). So, for my personal timetable I would get $500 plus taxes just pushed up from the route to the higher tickets from $3900 to $4400 (USD).

The whole route I found for $4400 included about $125 worth of locally operated tickets that I would have had to buy no matter what was on the RTW-File. And I should say that this also means outward and return trips to Easter Island, which cost the cheapest about 700 dollars. Now, these two planes are pretty high.

from Lima to Itza. Well, this plane is very costly. However, if you are flying from Lima to Miami and then from Miami to Cancun it is much less costly. At the same page I was looking at my home airfare from downtown Chicago to Dayton and they were significantly more costly than my home airfare from downtown Chicago to Miami and Miami to Dayton.

This One World 4 Continent was $4400 before tax, which I can only think of is another $1000 at least.
