The Ellington Airport[1][2] (IATA: EFD, ICAO: KEFD, FAA LID: EFD) is a publicly and militarily used airport in Harris County, Texas, USA. 1 ] It is a Houston city property situated 15 sea mile ( 17 sea mile 28 km) south east of Houston city centre. Formerly known as Ellington Field, then Ellington Air Force Base, then again Ellington Field[3][4], it is contained in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011-2015, which categorised it as General Aviation Relief Airport.

5 ] The airport does not have regular business traffic. Houston City presented a map on 4 September 2013 which, if permitted, would include a purpose-built purpose-built complex, renamed Houston Spaceport. Ellington Field was founded on 21 May 1917 by the Army Air Services and was one of the first facilities of the World War I Army Air Services when air travel was still in its early stages.

It' titled after 1 Lt. Eric Ellington, a US Army pilot fatally injured in a 1913 air accident in San Diego, California. Ellington Airport, initially designed as a flight school, is currently used by NASA, General Aerospace, NASA and Air Force personnel. The Ellington Airport is one of the few airports constructed for World War I education and still in use.

The Lone Star Flight Museum relocated from Galveston's Scholes International Airport in Galveston to Ellington in September 2017, a move that had been underway since the effects of Hurricane Ike in 2008.

In Ellington, the museum constructed a fire new building that houses its flying and stationary airplanes as well as the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. Ellington has its own staff facilities, including staff offices and administration rooms, so the museum can only be operated from Ellington. The Continental Express services between Ellington Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Nordhouston were discontinued in 2004. Before the discontinuation of intercontinental traffic, the Bush Intercontinental and Ellington Field line was the shorter fixed-wing line in the United States, at only 25 nm (46 km).

Ellington Field continues to serve as a relief airport for Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby Airport and services rerouted planes from these two destinations during adverse conditions and rush hours. FAA Airport Master Record for EFD (Form 5010 PDF).
