Century-Fox grabbed the right to author ize James Clavell to compose the scenario, his first commission (Clavell wrote the scripts for The Great Escape, 633 Squadron, The Satan Bug, To Sir, With Love, the latter of which he also ran â" he also became a very succesful writer of novels, publishing novels such as King Rat, Tai-Pan, Shogun and Noble House, all of which became either movies or mini-series).
He' already made some sci-fi movies, Rocketship X-M and Kronos. At that time, serials weren't too widespread, but after the hit of the first movie Fox chose to make another fly painting, Return of the Fly, which went into full length and was published a year later.
Paul Sawtell and Bert Shefter's crew wrote the score for The Fly and Return of the Fly. Starting with exactly the kind of grandiose and unforgettable music you'd want for a picture named The Fly, Sawtell and Shefter, the subject for the lucky pair is immediately introduced at the heart of the picture, and it immediately established the narrative piece of humanity that is so important for any sci-fi or horror work.
And from there it continues with the classical Sawtell and Shefter, with the frightening music and the humans music that balance each other out and create a harmony of terrors and things gone awry, all in this incredibly great Fox soundstereo. It is one of the great sci-fi/horror scoores. It is as powerful as a full length piece and it is not just an infusion of the first full length piece, which is fresh.
Both The Fly and Return of the Fly were previously published in a Percepto Records release case (which included Curse of the Fly, written by Shefter alone) that was long out of stock and difficult to find. In this new edition we have chosen to present only the first two movies, as they were made only one year apart and were both written by Sawtell and Shefter.
We did some cleaning up and remastering the sounds, combining some short cuts and removing the âFox Fanfareâ as it obviously wasn't written by Sawtell and Shefter. Each score is completely â" The Fly in brilliant hi-fi, and the low-budget Return of the Fly in brilliant hi-fi.
So turn off the light and sunbathe yourself in the uncanny splendour of two classical sci-fi/horror score of the great Paul Sawtell and Bert Shefter teams.
