I' ve never seen a rate that' cheaper at the airports. I used lastmiute.com on the occasion we woke up with the wish to go the next morning and was happy with the results. I' ve never travelled by plane with them, but I have gotten some great offers for hotel and villa accommodation.

I' d certainly use this website or try to get a place with a reserved trip like Thomas Cook. They are also often available for reduced rates and sometimes our domestic cruiser has reduced rates 24 ours before a planned voyage. Each of these ways, I think, would be a better alternative than going to the airports and trying to negotiate with a ticketing agency who probably doesn't have the power to reduce a price on a ticketing except for a prime spot for someone who has already made a booking.

It' probably cheapest for them to go flying with a few empty seats than to earn a rep, sell inexpensive seats at the last minute. Doing so could lead to a backlash and possibly many travellers would not make reservations in advance, but would only arrive a few flights in advance.
