Early Sunday mornings a taxi drowsed behind the steering wheels and wheeled his taxi into a trench. Around 5:15 a.m. the California Highway Patrol reacted to stories about a Victoria crown in a trench near North Friant Road and North Willow Avenue. Arriving, the officer was seated on the truck and was not hurt in the accident.

The taxi companies the drivers work for are not known and there were no passenger in their cabs.

The ROCKFORD - Officers are considering a suggestion to reinforce the city's taxi-rules. There would be a need for both taxi and driver registration. Any taxi would have to be covered, passed an examination and the driver would have to undergo a biometric wallpaper examination. It would empower Rockford PD to confiscate noncompliant cabs.

Though Rockford has for years had a regulation that requires annual approval of cabs, the regulation lacks enforcing mechanism. The Rockford officers believe there are a dozen cabs in the town. Neither have been approved in 2018, said prosecutor Kerry Partridge. The lay assessors of the Code & Regulation Committee revised the proposal on Monday to allow more review period.

Officers have argued that taxi licences would enhance security, take consumer protection action, enhance the service provided and generate revenues through yearly licence royalties. It would not cover limos generally operated by Partridge on a contract base or transport operators such as Uber or Lyft operating under different rules.

There would be a need for a crime screen before a taxi rider could obtain a taxi licence. The Rockford City Council on Monday authorized $1.6 million for new law enforcement cars and equipment in other areas. Acquisitions included three Dodge Chargers, 33 all-wheel-drive Ford Policy Interceptor Utility cars and three Ford limousines.

It also approved the acquisition of camera, laptop and station docks for each of the patrolling cars, in additional to partition walls, weapon stands, equipment and safety beams.
