Jet Legs

Jetlag is a physiological state resulting from changes in the circadian rhythms of the body caused by fast long-range transmeridians. Southwest Airlines' Jet Leg usually occurs at the end of a crowded flight. Jetlag, also called desynchronous and flight fatigue, is a temporary disorder that causes fatigue, insomnia and other symptoms due to air travel through time zones. Jetlag can cause headaches, insomnia and irritability. Jetlag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when you travel through multiple time zones and cannot sleep.

Jetlighting may take several consecutive business days before the traveler is fully adapted to the new timezone; a rest per hour is a recommended policy. Jetlag can also appear on shorter inland journeys with no timezone differences when used in conjunction with a long drive, especially between evenings and early mornings.

Jetlag is a chronic biological problem,[5] similar to the problems often caused by shifts and insomnia of the Circadian rythm. However, when the circulation timer (circadian rhythm) travels over several timezones, it is not synchronised with the target times as it will experience natural light and dark, unlike the cycles to which it has become used.

There is a disturbance in the body's own patterns because the rhythm that determines periods for food, sleep, hormonal control, fluctuations in bodily temperatures and other activities no longer corresponds to the surroundings and in some cases to each other. How quickly the human organism adapts to the new timetable will depend on both the person and the driving style; some individuals may need several extra driving hours to adapt to a new timezone, while others may have little disturbance.

Exceeding the International Date Line does not in itself cause jetlag, as the guideline for jetlag calculation is the number of traversed timezones with a maximal possible delay of plus or minus 12hrs. In case the delay between two places is greater than 12 hrs, this number must be subtracted from 24.

The UTC+14 timezone, for example, will be at the same point in UTC-10 as the UTC+14 timezone, although the former is one to one. Ten hours between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa does not cause jetlag because the direction of traffic is mainly north-south. Four hours flying between Miami, Florida and Phoenix, Arizona in the United States can lead to jet-lag as the main driving destination is east-west.

Retarded transient disturbance is a medicinal disease characterised by a retarded transient period and a proportionally retarded wake-up period due to a transient retardation in the biologic main watch. However, if these individual sleepers are permitted to do as their own end-ogenous watch dictates, they will not experience any negative impact from their phase-shifted rest.

Illumination is the most powerful incentive for reorienting a person's sleep-wake program, and carefully controlling exposures and avoiding the use of clear lighting for the eye can accelerate adaptation to a new timezone. No jet lag is caused by north-south travel that does not exceed a certain timezone. Traversing the Arctic Ocean or even the Arctic Pole (often the shorter distance between Northeastern Europe and Alaska or the west coast of Canada and East Asia), however, results in a considerable delay.

Even seasonally varying levels of exposure to the sun when crossing the aquifer can lead to a slightly disturbed sleep patterns at the target. Generally, the changeover to the new timezone is quicker for East-West journeys than for West-East journeys. An adaptation to the western direction lasts about half of the number of crossing timezones in a day; for trips to the eastern direction, the adaptation to the new timezone lasts about two third of the number of crossing timezones in a day.

Studies [2] have shown that athlete performances in both single and collective sport are better measured than in the opposite directions for those who flew west to the event area. The greatest problem is the journey to the eastern part with six to nine timezones, as it is preferable to prevent lights in the morning.

Travels of 10hrs or longer are usually best handled if one assumes that it is a 14-hour crossing to the west and the watch is delayed. The programmes take into account the user's sleeping behaviour, the number of timezones traversed and the driving style. "Model Temporal Regulation." Sleeping.
