Application procedures for taxi driving licenses are the same for the transport of Hackney vehicles as for personal use. Licenses are granted for a term of up to 3 years, but we may issue licenses for a lesser term if we deem it appropriate. Below you will find information on how to obtain a new driving licence.

You must have a full driver's license for 12 month, be over 18 years of age and have the right to work in the UK to obtain a new driver's license for hackney carriage taxis or taxis.

When you have an EC/EEA driver's license, it must be presented with a valid DP9 equivalent. Great Britain - Drive in Great Britain with a non-GB card. Their EC/EEA driver's license is valid for two years from the date of residence in the UK. A British driver's license must be presented after two years.

If you have questions about penal or vehicle related sentences, please read the "Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy - The Relevance of Convictions Policy (Appendix E)" in the section entitled Documentation before making an appointement. When there are misgivings about your previous police history and/or car balance, the request will be forwarded to a consultation before the Taxi and Other Subcommittee.

You must successfully complete this test before you can make an appointment to take the on-site test. Please be aware that you will also be photoed for your taxi driver logo. While you can repeat the test as many times as necessary until you complete it, please be aware that if you fail either test again, your police record card may be more than 3 month old, which would mean submitting a new application form to the Disclosure and Restriction Service.

After successfully passing the placement and level test, you must obtain the Edexel BTEC Level 2 Certification in'Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver (QCF)'. After completing the BTEC course, you must make an appointment with your physician and ask him to fill out a "medical reporting form" which you can find in the document area or pick up at the Town Hall front desk. Once you have your police record, please return it to the email addresses at the bottom of this page.

When this is safe and you have fulfilled all other conditions, you will receive a license for your product, either your own license or a license for a limited period of up to 3 years. The one that appears on your personal and the other in the licenced car when you act as a licenced driver.
