Airborne radar 24: Airplanes, flights in the air

It' s amazing to think of the number of aircraft in the air at any given moment. A good way to visually capture all this information is Flightradar 24, a live aircraft tracker that displays information about tens of thousand aircraft in near-figure. First thing you see when you see Flightradar 24 is a global chart with a pile of small aircraft in the air.

Here is a close-up of the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The Flightradar 24 gathers information from various source, among them the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) displays. They also collect information using a technique named ADS-B ( Automated Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) which uses a transponder attached to each airplane to deliver information such as identification information, elevation and speed.

Flightradar 24 has estimated that 70% of all airliners are fitted with these specific tags, which help Flightradar to remain precise and up-to-date. The number of airplanes in the air becomes overpowering as we further zooms out. In order to trace aircraft without this ADS-B capability, Flightradar 24 uses a procedure known as Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA).

Basically, the measurement measures the amount of elapsed working hours required to pick up signal from older Mode S aircraft and determine their position. After all, here are all the flights that are followed all over the globe. Despite the large scale of the African Continent, Africa has significantly fewer flights, and we hardly see any flights over Russia at all.

In order to follow a particular aircraft - maybe a boyfriend or a beloved person is travelling - you can look for the aircraft number or aircraft number, or you can click on any aircraft symbol to find out more about its characteristics and location. Other layers can and are displayed in your display in 3-D fashion.

Click on these aircraft to find out more about them. It' really awesome to get on a plane and see your trajectory: how you leave the airport...and the amazing route you take to get there in the fastest and most effective way possible.
