In Israel, a skyTran system is being built as a pilot project. The system's max. passenger per hours and per way is 11,500 persons, which can be achieved by intermediate cars at 1/2 second intervals. At 130 km/h (80 mph), the cars are arranged at a distance of 59 ft (18 m) and halted by several fail-safe devices. The automation of system controls would make skyTran safe to drive by removing errors (> 95% of road fatalities).

In 1990 Malewicki developed the concept of skyTran and this year filed a US registration, which was issued in 1992 as US Patents #5108052. 15 ] In the following years he wrote several articles about skyTran. He presented a 1991 presentation to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Future Transportation Conference in Portland, Oregon, titled "People Pods - Miniature Magnetic Levitation Vehicles for Personal Non-Stop Transportation".

It is a thorough account of the approach at this point, although some important characteristics of the skyTran contemporary designs are only considered as optional, involving maglev technology instead of using bicycles and suspended under the roadway instead of driving over it. Unimodal and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) commissioned the construction of a 400-500 metre high grinding test facility on the IAI site in June 2014.

In the event of a succesful piloting IAI will establish a skyTran business infrastructure in the cities of Tel Aviv, Herzliya and Netanya.
