New York City FHV riders require a TLC (Taxi and Limousine Commission) licence. On the TLC website, you can fill out your application online. Choose "TLC Driver Licence (Medallion/For-Hire/Street Hail Livery Driver)" Store the TLC application number you will need later in the application procedure. However, if you are submitting an application online, it is very important to remember your TLC registration number (see picture to the right).

Taxicab licencing

Licenses are granted for Hackney cars, personal rental cars, driver and personal landlords and we conduct inspection to make sure compliance with standard is upheld. Driving licenses for driver, rolling stock and operator shall all be granted by the same approval body. Driver's licenses are valid only for those who wish to operate either a cab or a privately rented car.

Any of the above mentioned riders may, however, request a special authorisation if there is a real cause which will prevent them from helping people in wheelchairs. Riders must submit a request for a waiver to the Licences Department, which must be checked by a doctor.
