All taxis in Hong Kong are measured, relatively cheap, air-conditioned and clean. There are three types of taxis, each of which is identified by its colour: Green for new areas and blue for Lantau Island. Hongkong Taxis Hongkong cabs are abundant and inexpensive. Here is a practical "fare calculator", just type in the information "Start from" and "Go to" and it will calculate the price of the ticket according to the mileage. Hongkong taxis are colour marked for the different areas they serve: Blue for the remote islands, green for the new areas.

There are three ways of serving the airport. Mostly you will have to deal with the scarlet cabs, and casually with the turquoise taxi for the trip from the Great Buddha to Tai O in Lantau for example. Though most taxi riders are English speaking, many will not, but certainly will, be able to hear the name of the usual sightseeing or hotel.

The majority of hostels have maps with the imprint "Please take me to..." with the name and adress of the hostel as well as many of Hong Kong's famous landmarks. If you take a taxi from the airports, be careful of the boys in the arrivals hall who offer you: "You want a taxi? "Those are exorbitant personal vehicle operators that demand three to four more than the normal taxi-rate.

Apart from the legality, we have noticed that some taxi riders are more indulgent, while others remain unperturbed by the "rule". Hongkong cabs do not wear children's automobile seatings, and although they are "advisable", they are not needed if one is not available, which leads us to the issue of seatbelts.....

Drivers have the right to reject passengers who do not have one. Each taxi is fitted with a ticket-printing device which, in conjunction with the ticket price, includes the taxi number, date and hour. If you ask for a voucher, the rider knows that you have his number, he will not be bothered to increase the surcharges due, see below.

If your taxi rider wants to "negotiate" the price of the ticket or declines to use the counter, take another taxi. Queue fees are billed by the counter. Sometimes, in some cases, in addition to the price of the ticket in the counter, there are additional fees that you also have to pay.

These surcharges are added by the rider to the ticket price in the number of metres. Even though some taxi drivers are able/willing to take credits and/or squids, this is not yet the default and currency definitely regulations. Currently there is a big boost from all Hong Kong mobiles to enter the taxi industry.

The Octopus is working on a special smart phone application that allows the driver to gather tickets while the passenger just swipe their Octopus cards or scans a QR image to get the ticket. Until now, riders had to use an Octopus badge scanner, which most riders did not want. It is hoped that with the increasing spread of all types of payment, cabs will soon become part of the majorstream.

What do you tip taxi riders? It' not usual to tip taxi riders in Hong Kong, but it is certainly valued. The last time our chauffeur drove from the airfield didn't bill us the HK5 per pocket, so we only added a little more than a tip.
