Lumpur Kuala full of contrast, full of vitality.

Kuala Lumpur, lovingly called "KL" by the Malaysians, is undoubtedly a crucible of historical buildings and civilizations. Today, the modest beginnings of the Malaysian mine industry as a sludgy coal mine are barely visible since Malaysia became independent of the British in 1957. They could stand at a road angle and look up at the soaring Petronas Twin Towers just to turn around and look at the stately Sultan Abdul Samad House, the most stunning column in Merdeka Square.

It has an approximate 1.6 million inhabitants and is one of the most prosperous towns in Southeast Asia, similar to Hong Kong and Singapore. One of the country's major tourist attractions for the many million visitors who visit Malaysia each year via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is also the country's major destination.

The Kuala Lumpur certainly has a good mixture of attraction, amusement and historic sights that warrant a multi-day visit to the town before you visit the other parts of the state. Kuala Lumpur is the center of everything as the business, finance and capitol of the state. That makes the journey to Kuala Lumpur actually quite easy.

Upon arrival at KLIA you can take a taxi, shuttles or trains to Kuala Lumpur. From the airport to the airport it is a 45 minute drive. One way fare for the airport shuttles is approximately $3.20 (Rm10), while one way fare returns you approximately $5.80 (Rm18).

The taxi rates from KLIA to KL range from rim 70 for a budgetaxi to RM 180 for a luxustaxi. The taxicoupon can be purchased directly from KLIA. Make sure you take an airport taxi and not one of the outouts that hang around the airport.

Trains stop at KL Sentral railway and from there you can comfortably take a taxi to your local guesthouse, which is much less expensive. By the way, the price of the trains is Rm35 and the trip itself takes about 36 mins. If you are in the Kuala Lumpur town, the best way to get around is by walking, taking a bus, taxi or taking a train.

There is definitely a large choice of Kuala Lumpur hotel options. The town offers not only businessmen and tourist, but also a large choice of cheap accommodations for the backpackers. Travelers will find luxury boutiques and 5-star resorts such as JW Mariott Kuala Lumpur, Ascot Kuala Lumpur and Ritz Carlton Hotel Kuala Lumpur to name but a few.

Speaking for myself, I like to live in the Bukit Bintang neighborhood where everything is within easy reach, like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. The Melia Hotel Kuala Lumpur and the Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur are very convenient and inexpensive. Alamanda Hotel Petaling Street Kuala Lumpur, China Town Inn Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Street Hotel Kuala Lumpur are all in Chinatown and are just a stone's throw away from one of Kuala Lumpur's most emblematic monuments, the old Central Market.

The Kuala Lumpur offers a good mixture of everything from grocery stores to the renowned Kuala Lumpur nighlife along the Jalan P.Ramlee and Bukit Bintang Road. There are several large commercial centres around the Bukit Bintang area that are well well worth a trip. The Sungai Wang Plaza, Bukit Bintang, the two oldest commercial centres in KL, the Berjaya Times Square, Lot 10 and the Kuala Lumpur Pavilion are just a few of the places a shopper has to go when he is in KL.

Since it was also the administration center of the English during the period of colonization, the town has many architectonic legacies inherited from the English and which will be a joy to those who appreciate the architecture historic. Contemporary developments have also made their mark on the town. Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur is also its culture center, so it is not a surprise to find many different culture sights in this busy area.

Here is a listing of some of the places I suggest to new and old tourists who have not yet left the city: Altogether KL is a fabulous, vibrant town with a lot to see and do. It' also a great place to be as a turnstile while traveling to other areas, especially with the affordable cheap airfare right now!
