Around the world, ticketing has the capacity to help adventure-seeking travellers cut enormous sums of cash, drastically cutting the cost of long journeys ending in all sorts of savage and distant destination. First of all, it splits the world into six continents: The fares are then based on the number of lanes you want to land on, whether three, four, five or six. You could also visit Miami, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Doha, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Madrid on a cheap three-continent itinerary.

Travelling on six continents could include Sao Paulo, Santiago, Auckland, Sydney, Cairns, Johannesburg and Cape Town in the mixture. Currently, the Allianz comprises 16 carriers, from Brazil's premier TAM to the Finnish flag ship Air Finnair. However, this is a smaller number of subscribers than the two rivals of one world, so that the buyer of an one world Explorer pass has a somewhat smaller target area.

Africa in particular lacks opportunities, so if this is an important part of your travel, you may want to consider one of the following choices. Some of these restrictions are offset by the flexible nature of your tickets, as on-eworld is the only airline that allows you to travel in a different jurisdiction than the one in which you are located.

However, there are still some limitations: three-continent flight is only possible in the northern hemisphere; continental to continental travels must be continental in a continual west or east orientation; and there is an overall maximum of 16 flight limits. The Star Alliance Round the World Fare may be the best choice for travellers with the wildest dream of faraway shores and mountains.

With 27 carriers serving 1316 routes in an amazing 192 nations, it has the largest range of continental travel among major carriers - around 200 more than any of its rivals. Rather than divide the world into continent and determine the price from there, it computes the cost of the ticketing based on the number of mileage travelled and divides it into four categories:

Travellers can select between a "Normal" and a "Special Economy" pass within each category: Normal has a maximum of 16 departures; Special Economy has a minimum and a fair share of the overall costs of your tickets. One last determinant of your overall rate is the destination of your trip.

The scheme gives price-conscious travellers some degree of freedom in scheduling their itineraries. Restricting their number of departures and travelling sometimes by road - perhaps in particularly inexpensive destinations - they can opt for a special economy ticketing and save a significant part of the overall costs of their fares.

However, the greater degree of inflexibility in this area is offset by further limitations elsewhere: travellers must end their trip in the same state where they begin, and any change to their original planned itinerary results in a $125 fee. A further 16 carriers have since boarded and formed an airline network that includes the entire planet with over 1000 routes.

The Sky Team's Round the World Ticketing system splits the planet into three horizontal zones: America, Europe and Africa, and Asia and Oceania. Like all three SkyTeam Alliance partners, SkyTeam has worked tirelessly to distribute its goals evenly across the world - but again it has had to make compromises somewhere compared to the larger number of Star Alliance goals, and this commitment has been achieved mainly in Africa.

Tickets will again be priced by kilometre, with a similar rate of four levels to the competing Star Alliance: 26,000, 29,000, 33,000 and 38,000 mile. There are similar restrictions elsewhere as well: travellers may make a total of 15 stops and must end their journey in their home state.
