The Westchester County Airport was constructed during World War II in 1942 as the headquarters of an Air National Guard force to defend New York and Rye Lake, part of the city's groundwater system. The Guard Units left the Westchester Air National Guard Base in May 1983, with the expansion of the Westchester suburb, and relocated to Stewart International Airport in Orange County.

At the beginning of 2010, Cape Air launched the Lebanon Municipal Airport in New Hampshire as a new airport destination. Cape Air services take off and land at Signature Flight Support just South of the Central Flight Station due to a shortage of ticketing facilities in the Central Flight Station area. Air Canada's local subsidiary in June 2010 said it would stop all air travel to the airport.

The Commuter Codesharing with Beechcraft turbo-prop airplanes was carried out on Air Canada's order for several years between the airport and Toronto. ANOMS measures the acoustic level in the survey area and compares it with the sounds of aircraft and the neighbourhood around the airport. Using these tools, HPN officers have pinpointed the issues where local levels of activity are the most significant. The HPN has six programmes in place to help mitigate the impact of noises.

A further programme is the High Range Noise Event Programme, which uses the ANOMS. The HPN also has programmes that do not allow aircraft weighing more than 12,500 lbs to take off at take-off crossings or to run their jet engine without airport permission. For Westchester County Airport, the IATA is HPN.
