Take to the skies! Jet Airways!

25 years ago, the India aerospace industry was a very different matter as the home base was limited to the state-owned company Indians. Mr Naresh Goyal, who worked for a number of major airline companies through his Jet Air Private Limited tour operator, benefited from the imminent booming economy in the area.

Launched as an airport taxiservice, Jet Airways opened its first flights between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on May 5, 1993. The first year it had a total of four Boeing 737-300 lease planes, which operated 28 flights a day to 12 different locations. Today it has a total of 119 aircrafts servicing 65 Indian and international routes.

Initially, Gulf Air and Kuwait Airlines each owned 20 per centĀ of the Jet shares, the remainder being owned by Goyal. However, with the goverment banning overseas investments in India's airlines, Goyal purchased the business in 1997. By 2013, after the industry was opened to overseas airlines (up to 49 per cent investments were allowed), it was selling a 24 per cent share to Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways.

This was the first to start a FFP in India, the first privately owned carrier in India to travel abroad, and the first to introduce a co-branded debit credit facility. Until 2010 Jet became one of the leading companies on the home markets with a 26 percent stake. The company continues to hold a 17 percent stake in the airport and is recording double-digit increases in the number of passengers.

Supported by an emerging centre layer and new airfields, the Indian aerospace industry is expanding at a rapid pace. By the mid-20s, the IAEA anticipates that India will become the third biggest airline destination after China and the USA. "Those lean planes will be used in both the home and overseas markets," said Jet Airways Deputy CEO and CFO Mr. Anton Agarwal.

"Our home business will remain our mainstay. But these planes also have a longer cruising distance. Well, with this plane I can fly to Kuala Lumpur or Kenya. All these targets, which could not be achieved with narrowbody planes, we will be able to achieve with the 737 Max.

Jet's largest rivals on the home carrier markets are the low-cost airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet. "As we began this voyage [of a single brand], our planes were used 11 hour days. Five hrs per annum, providing 15 planes with 15 additional capacities without investment costs. Now Jet is flying from Chennai and Bengaluru to Europe, so Southern India passengers no longer have to switch flights in Mumbai or Delhi.

Jet Airways is currently the only airline in India flying to Europe and North America other than Air India. Jet has established many alliances with major global airline companies over the years. In addition to Etihad and Air France-KLM, there are code-share arrangements with 20 airline companies around the world.
