Johnny Denver A lot of writers have to compose hundred of tunes before they can compose a big one. John Denver only had five. His fifth track was "Leaving on a Jet Plane", a melody that became the number one 1969 smash for Peter, Paul and Mary and ushered in the careers of one of the most famous writers of pops.

Asked whether he has a particular way of composing music, Denver answers that he is a very non-structured author. "Not every single goddamn time, I don't just go around sitting down and trying to compose a tune. You go in and try to compose a song," he says. "To me, it pretty often starts with a sentence like "fly the jet" or "follow me" or "back home" or "sunshine on my shoulders".

Although his situational awareness and view of some issues may have shifted since he wrote them, Denver says when he listens to one of his tracks, it always brings him back to where he is and from where it was composed. "Annie's Song" is a great example," he says, leans forward in his place and smiles.

"When I wrote the tune, what I felt through the tune was what I felt, not all the other things. It'?s a great romance and it'?s about being in love. What captivated the listeners in the 1960s and remains Denver's greatest gain as a writer is his capacity to hit an emotive note in his audiences through easy, immediate, clearly articulated emotions that come to live with living images.

Denver not only recounts what he feels to the audience in such different tracks as "Rocky Mountain High", "Calypso" and "Grandma's Feather Bed", he also brings them to this place. "While Denver sings: "I am the eagle, I am living in the highlands in cliffy surroundings, although they fell and rose from the heights.

Denver's capacity to move audiences with the help of sound is something that is not certain and can be conveyed through training and workshop.
