This was Boeing's first wide-bodied twin jet and the first commercial aircraft with a two-headed glasscockpit. Originally the 767-200 was put into operation in 1982, followed by the 767-300 in 1986 and the 767-400ER, an extended-range version (ER), in 2000.

Boeing began studying a more powerful 767 in 1986, which eventually led to the 777, a bigger twin jet. By August 2018, Boeing had won 1,224 orders for the 767 from 74 customer with 1,118 deliveries. 1 ] In July 2018, a number of 742 of these planes were in operation.

In the 1980s, the non-passenger versions of the 767 are in operation from 2018, while the sequel to the passanger version, the 787, was put into operation in 2011. In May 1985, the 767 flew. Boeing 767-400ER was presented to the public on August 26, 1999. FedEx Express in December 2011 announces an order for 767-300F for 27 planes to substitute its DC-10 freighter, with the USF order and Boeing's choice to resume manufacturing as drivers.

97 ] On July 21, 2015, FedEx reported an order for 50 767-300F with an option for another 50, the biggest order for this series. In February 2018, UPS reported that they were ordering a further 4 767-300Fs, bringing their combined order value to 63 Boeing 767 orders and shipments (cumulative by year):
